Recently I was out on a bike ride with my 3 year old and we ended up at a skate park.
You know, the crazy ramps and doo-dads, flips, the place that fractures wrists like it’s eating breakfast.
And she, of course, being 3, wanted to dive bomb off the big ramp.
No fear.
Just go.
(Naturally, I stopped her as a responsible parent would.)
Here’s the thing:
Little girl has more courage than your average job seeker in an interview, who answers questions like “what’s your biggest weakness?” with the all-powerful…
“I care too much.”
This is, as I call – boring.
You know what’s not boring?
Bombing off a ramp.
But one of them breaks your wrist if you’re not ready, and the other…doesn’t get you hired.
My little job seekers, let me give you a piece of advice:
When you play it safe, you end up being just like everybody else. Every other candidate who reads their resume. Who doesn’t know the magic 7 words to say when you walk into the room that changes the entire interview in one sentence.
(Chapter 1, page 1 of my book “10,000 Interviews”)
Here’s the even crazier thing:
Most people don’t even realize they do this.
They think safe is correct.
And all they really need to do is dig a bit. Into themselves. Into the 3 year old at the skate park about to do something dangerous. But…who has the courage to do it.
Somewhere along the way, you lost it.
It’s okay.
Many people do.
But it’s not okay if you want to land a job.
Safe does not get you hired in 2026.
Courage does. and maybe with a dash of dangerous.
Anyway.
If you’re tired of safe.
If you’re tired of not getting called back.
If you’re tired of landing on the reject pile.
Then maybe it’s time you strap that helmet on and bomb down the ramp.
My book, 10,000 Interviews, will show you exactly how to do this.
